After being let go, she enrolled in a 12-week software engineering course at General Assembly before joining NAB as a cloud engineering intern in January 2021.

She was then seconded to a higher position as a consultant in the technology careers team, allowing her to use her event planning skills and new technology expertise.

The bank received more than 3,000 applications for 250 internships which were integrated in January. The second cohort of interns will join the bank in July.

Growing demand for technology professionals is driven by NAB’s transformation program, which includes moving its applications to the cloud as well as supporting the acquisition of neobank 86,400 and Citigroup’s Australian consumer business .

In a market where a shortage of software developers has driven salaries up 45% in the past six months, former interns are already being called upon to fill mid-level vacancies at NAB.

“You now have a talent stream that you can tap into that’s been there for a number of years that allows you to provide career progression, career opportunities, your career transitions,” Ms. Warrener said.

Internship program criteria have been relaxed to recognize work experience or training to attract a wider pool of applicants to male-dominated technical teams.

About a quarter of the current cohort comes from the return to work program and people in career transition, almost 70% of whom are women.

Overall, approximately 40% of interns are women, the highest rate NAB has employed for the internship program.

The bank is also piloting a small program for interns on the autism spectrum, integrating its first four neurodiverse individuals.

Trainees also come from more traditional backgrounds. One in five interns study at RMIT, the bank’s largest university partner.

Christopher James, who manages industry partnerships for RMIT computer science students, said the additional positions reflected increased student and industry demand for hands-on technology skills and experience.

“There has been a drastic increase in demand from students for careers in technology, but also from industry to accommodate these students,” he said.

Nearly 100% of software engineering students who have completed an internship landed a full-time job after graduation, he said. Programs like NAB’s also give students the opportunity to work in different fields ranging from cybersecurity to cloud engineering.

“By the time they graduate they can be really confident about their future career and where they want to go,” Mr James said.
