Country and Irish music fans Julia Kelleher and Ricky O’Donovan got engaged during a Derek Ryan concert.

And as he proposed, Ricky O’Donovan serenaded Julia with Derek’s song God’s plan.

It was January 2019 at INEC Killarney, and in May of that year the couple set their wedding date as September 3, 2021.

When the big day dawned, Julia was going to have another pleasant surprise. The chords of Derek Ryan’s classic resonated the moment she entered the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her native Doneraile, Co Cork.

Ricky, who was waiting for her at the altar, then sang Julia in the aisle.

The bride and groom, from Kildorrery, Co Cork, were married by the bride’s cousin Father Liam Kelleher, Cobh, and held their reception at the Charleville Park Hotel.

Julia’s father, the late Jerome Kelleher, and Ricky’s mother, the late Betty Donovan, were also very much on their minds.

It was love at first sight for Julia and Ricky, adds the groom.

“We first met while working together at a local nursing home,” Ricky said.

They both worked with seniors, Julia as a care assistant and Ricky as a registered nurse. “We became close friends and then we started dating,” he added.

On her big day, Julia’s sister Elaine Kelleher was her bridesmaid while her bridesmaids were her nieces, Ciara Hones and Chloe Enright, and her best friend, Katie Stack.

“Katie and I have been best friends since preschool – two days ago between us, she was born two days after me!” said Julia.

By his side were Ricky’s friends, James Dwane, as a witness, and Robert Coughlan, James Magner and Colin Palmer as the groomsmen.

Anthony Palmer and Mark Lenihan donned driver’s hats for the day to drive the couple’s wedding cars.

Julia looked perfect in a wedding dress crafted by a seamstress in Charleville, styled and made up by Catherine Hickey, Limerick, while Ricky cut a dapper touch in a costume from Suits Distributors, Cork.

Una Fitzgerald designed the floral arrangements and the bride’s creative flair shone in making sure their big day was extra special.

“Julia made a lot of her own decor, including a wedding bike, a mirror, and she organized bags of candy for the wedding party – and even handkerchiefs to dry people’s tears of joy at the wedding,” he said. Ricky said.

The couple made sure Ricky’s brother James and his family don’t miss out on the fun of marriage, even though they live in Australia. “We faced him to be a part of it all and his partner Kate made him the same meal so he had everything we had to eat at the wedding back home in Australia,” Julia said.

The newlyweds have yet to plan their honeymoon due to the pandemic, but have taken time after the wedding with a spa day at the Kingsley Hotel in Cork. The bride, who works at Aldi, and the groom, a nurse, live in Kildorrery.
