Experts observed that there was a “marriage boom” where postponed marriages increased.
As vaccination warrants are put in place and travel restrictions have been lifted, the wedding industry appears to be resurfacing with equal vigor this season. The wedding industry has been one of the industries hardest hit due to the pandemic, but it has recovered at an extremely rapid rate, leading to a veritable renaissance of marriages for years to come. Experts observed that there was a “marriage boom” where postponed marriages increased. So, from the current season of 2021-22 to the next season of 2022-23, the demand for wedding services is and will be at an all time high. At the same time, it is important to note that the pandemic has been a catalyst for change. These changes have been seen across the wedding industry – from the more technical business side to the more timeless aspects like decor and fashion.
In business terms, the most common and widespread change is that micro but luxurious weddings will take precedence over large, elaborate weddings. Partly attributed to the covid-related security guidelines for ensuring a socially distant marriage, and in part because of the need to have close friends and family at your wedding alone, the future of the wedding business seems focus on more intimate gatherings. Exclusive guest lists will be given priority as the mindset has changed dramatically, where couples look after their guests a lot. Instead of having a big party, where the needs of the guests are often overlooked, this wedding season, the couples in question are looking to make the wedding ceremony an affair that will be comfortable and accessible to their guests. This wedding season, the allocation of funds will be towards an element of the wedding that the couple want to include, such as specialized catering, themed decor, or an extravagant sangeet.
While the wedding industry has been exclusively reserved for brides and the finer sensibilities of women, behind the scenes it has been seen that men are in charge. From providing stunning wedding outfits to event planning, the wedding industry had a tinge of irony. However, since the late 1990s and early 2000s, many female wedding planners, designers, and photographers have come to the fore. Wedding trends these days are driven by celebrity weddings, and the brains behind these weddings are usually powerful women who are able to perform such prestigious weddings without a hitch. While people of any gender can organize the perfect wedding, couples find that weddings planned by a team of women seem to be more holistic in nature. The rigidity and distant wedding planners of yesteryear are long gone and are replaced by a team of women who are involved in the wedding planning process as if their wedding is at stake. Starchy poses and fake smiles that were all the rage two decades ago have been replaced by natural weddings – all of these trends have been started by women in the wedding planning arena.
One of the most sought after wedding trends this wedding season is to have a lasting marriage. Sustainability, as a movement, is gaining ground and couples are hyper aware of their marriage’s carbon footprint. They therefore opt for reusable cutlery, abandoning single-use plastic cutlery. Another element they are looking at is creating a special menu that is seasonal in nature, so that the importation and transport of ingredients will be eliminated. Moreover, the menu will also be local in nature, capitalizing on the skills of experienced chefs and reliable catering companies. Today, couples are also looking to personalize their weddings. In order to make their wedding even closer to their hearts, couples seek out a specialist color palette. One of the most popular color schemes that couples go for is the ombre theme. Ombre hues do a great job of breaking up the monotony created by traditional hues of Indian weddings and provide a much needed element of lightness. Finally, decorative pieces that combine Indian flair with international traditions are also common this wedding season. From a fusion of colors to a fusion of cultures, the wedding decor in this case seeks to create a harmonious balance between various ideas and traditions.
It’s important to recognize that 2021 has been dedicated to thriving in the face of chaos. However, as the New Year dawns, it is important to note that the tone of the wedding decor will change completely to reflect the personal values of the couple in question. The lavish wedding formality will be toned down a bit, but the element of uber luxury will still be alive and well. Instead of having a huge party, an intimate gathering with elaborate centerpieces in gold, bronze or silver will reign supreme. Rustic chic is also on trend – think sultry desert decor, with rattan and wicker elements. While all of the decor will be local and enduring in nature, earthy tones will be highly valued in terms of the decor used. Soothing touches and cloud sofas that work wonderfully in a natural setting will gain traction. Lighting elements are also very important in future weddings. Shifting from singular and one-dimensional lighting schemes, couples opt for multi-layered lighting options that incorporate string lights to tealight candles, from candles to LED lights for a holistic illuminated experience.
Based on India Couture Week 2021, industry insiders are able to predict some prominent wedding trends for 2022 even in terms of clothing and fashion. Taking inspiration from bride Rhea Kapoor, brides can expect to incorporate pearls and text into their wedding attire. In this fantastic avant-garde fashion show, Kapoor ditched the transitional red dupatta and instead opted for a pearl veil and graphic skirt. Another popular trend is to have a blouse with a plunging neckline. From the open back to the off the shoulder, a deep collared blouse has slowly become a cult among Indian brides. Paying homage to the traditional tribal elements of India, boho-chic elements are very popular. It perfectly combines the delicate ideas of the tribal world and combines them with the senses of contemporary fashion in order to come up with a unique wedding outfit for every bride. Some popular designers have also created trendy sleeves and shoulders on their own. With a unique structure and stunning silhouette, the use of iridescent materials makes the wedding equipment truly magical.
As we move past this home transition, period of increased learning, the marriage trends we see are also largely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. A transformation is brewing around the corner, and it is high time that we, as an industry, had to embrace it.
