Royal Family LIVE: Nation gets ‘morale lift’ after Queen recovers from covid | royal | News

The names of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been outraged on social media by Russian bots, reports say.

Over the past week, members of the royal family have paid tribute to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

In a rare show of responding to a sensitive Royal Family question, the Cambridges and Sussexes made statements, while the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall put the issue at the heart of their work.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have publicly expressed their support for Ukraine following President Putin’s invasion of the country via social media.

On Tuesday morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Prince William and Kate for “standing with the brave citizens of Ukraine at this crucial time”.

However, Richard Eden, editor of the Daily Mail newspaper, pointed out how apparently fans of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had attacked the Ukrainian leader.

Harry and Meghan had also sent their own words of support to Ukraine but were not mentioned by Mr Zelensky, and it is unclear whether he thanked them privately.

Mr Eden said: ‘It was something extraordinary, here we have the President [Volodymyr] Zelensky is struggling to survive, his life is in danger and he was able to send a message to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, thanking them for their support of the Ukrainian people.

“He then begins to be abused by some of Harry and Meghan’s most strident followers on social media, saying ‘Why didn’t you thank them?

However, Mr Eden’s other panelist, author and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop wondered if these accounts might have a more nefarious origin.

Dr Dunlop speculated that the accounts could be Russian robots, tarnishing the Sussexes’ name.
