National survey of photographers signals post-pandemic boom in wedding events with increased focus on meaningful celebrations

ShootProof survey of professional photographers confirms ‘the year of the wedding‘ predictions with 64% reporting revenue gains in 2022 – with an increase in more intimate gatherings

ATLANTE, May 31, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — ShootProof, a platform used by more than 300,000 photographers to share, deliver, print and sell their photos, conducted an extensive survey of professional photographers and small businesses. The aim was to understand the impact of the pandemic on bookings and revenue and how the industry is rebuilding towards the “year of the wedding” expected in 2022.

Of the nearly 200 survey participants, 60% reported a loss of business with the onset of the pandemic, with half reporting revenue losses of more than 50% in 2020. On the other hand, the results indicate that the current rebound is better than the initial industry. hit, with 64% reporting revenue gains in 2022 compared to a relatively flat 2021.

“For professional photographers in particular, this has been a time of change and flux. We wanted to check in with our community to see how we could help navigate the rapid pivots in the industry,” noted Rachel LaCour Niesen, Market Intelligence Manager at ShootProof. “Professional photographers are indicators of economic health. We believe the results of this survey underscore the continuing need to capture memories and the resilience of the wedding category as a whole.”

Alongside the indicated resurgence of wedding photography in 2022, survey participants reported a strong trend towards smaller weddings, with the majority predicting the change will be permanent. “I think people are going back to basics: less ‘plush’, more substance. Sure, we all love an overhead centerpiece…but I really believe couples focus more on the love,” noted a ShootProof survey participant.

The meaning of “less is more” resonated in many open-ended responses to the survey. “I think the pandemic has fundamentally changed the wedding industry. Couples who thought they had to have a big wedding to meet their family’s expectations found they didn’t need to spend more than $30,000. $ to celebrate their love. And although intimate weddings and runaways have become popular out of necessity, couples have found that they are cheaper, less stressful and more meaningful.”

In an age of abundant image content, photographers have also advocated the need for greater permanence around wedding photography, not just capturing moments, but documenting them for generations to come. “My goal for 2022 is to educate customers on the importance of printing their photos rather than burying them in the digital graveyard,” added one survey participant.

With the survey results, Niesen feels optimistic about the industry she has been part of for 30 years. “I think we can evolve the tagline ‘the year of marriage’ into ‘the year of commemorating special moments,'” Niesen added. “Photographers have an honorable role in this act of capturing and preserving our most precious memories.”
