Free LGBTQ+ Wedding Ceremonies | Eyewitness News

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — More than a dozen LGBTQ+ couples got married Sunday in Luzerne County, for free.

Sajadah and Kamani Bigelow exchanged their wedding rings in an intimate wedding ceremony on Sunday.

“Well, we met through other friends and it was something that wasn’t meant to be but ended up being,” said Kamani Bigelow of New Jersey.

“She’s my best friend,” added Sajadah Bigelow of New Jersey.

The couple have been together for almost 10 years and thanks to a wedding officiant from Wilkes-Barre, they closed the deal as a married couple for free.

Lori Prashker-Thomas of Ceremonies by Lori, has partnered with Spirit of the Butterfly Wedding Services to offer a day of free weddings to couples from the LGBTQ+ community.

“Everyone is equal and everyone deserves to be married and no matter what that marriage looks like, that’s what we need to do. And we need to make sure everyone within every community can be helped. said Lori Prashker-Thomas, owner, lead officiant, Ceremonies by Lori.

Her business started in 2011 when her out-of-state friends couldn’t find a rabbi to marry them because they were a same-sex couple.

She says her business is inclusive because love doesn’t discriminate. But, unfortunately, this is not the case for all companies.

“There are still different providers these days that don’t serve the LGBTQ community. I don’t know, it’s not fair,” Prashker-Thomas added.

More than a dozen couples have signed up for the free services. Of the happy couples, the Bigelows say they are the most grateful for the support.

“I think it’s a blessing, especially what they’re doing for us, what they’re doing for the LGBTQ community. It’s good,” added Kamani Bigelow from New Jersey.

Ceremonies by Lori plans to expand its services to other states, including Massachusetts and Connecticut.
